Chloe Feoranzo and Friends
July 19

Chloe Feoranzo, wizard of the reed instruments, will perform with some distinguished musical friends at the AFCDJS monthly concert-dance on July 19.

Chloe has appeared at jazz festivals with a wide-ranging assortment of bands. Currently she enjoys well-deserved status as a guest artist on the festival circuit. Later this year, be sure to hear her at the Sweet & Hot Music Festival, the Pismo Beach Jubilee By The Sea, the Suncoast Dixieland Classic and of course the San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival.

On July 19, she will play with guitarist Joey Carano, bassist Rob Thorsen and pianist Jason Wanner. Joey is well known for his work with Bobby Gordon at Milligan’s in La Jolla. Rob has performed with too many “name” musicians to list here. Jason Wanner is a recent transplant from Fresno; a longtime member of the Blue Street Jazz Band.

With this lineup, expect to hear swinging jazz standards played by top musicians from America’s Finest City!

Note: Bobby Gordon was originally scheduled to appear on July 19, but was forced to cancel due to an upcoming surgical procedure. We have rescheduled Bobby for the concert on Nov. 15. Meanwhile, we wish him a speedy recovery and a quick return to playing!

South Bay Jazz Ramblers
August 16

The South Bay Jazz Ramblers will perform for AFCDJS on Aug. 16.

Led by cornetist Wally Winters, the Ramblers include Frank Chaddock, cornet; Lee Fugal, trombone and vocals; Tony Higgins, clarinet and sax; Shirley Winters, keyboard; Jim Goodwin, banjo and guitar; Don Mathews, bass; Fred Allee, drums; and vocalist 97 year-old Mary Barton.

The band has a long-running engagement at Fuddruckers in Chula Vista and they have performed numerous times for AFCDJS, including appearances at the monthly concert-dance and at the annual San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival.

Heliotrope Ragtime Orchestra
September 20

Ragtime and early jazz are the specialties of the Heliotrope Ragtime Orchestra. The group attracts dancers in Ragtime Era attire, who are familiar with the fancy dance steps of yesteryear.  Cornetist Bruce Vermazen and pianist Bob Pinsker co-lead the orchestra. Their bandmates are: Daniel and Cheryl Swem, violins; Fernando Herrera, flute and piccolo; Everett Crouse, clarinet; Ed Henson, cornet; Alan Adams, trombone; Patrick McMahon, tenor sax; John Winkelman, tuba; and Ed Ducharme, drums.
You don’t have to know how to dance the Texas Tommy or the Cakewalk to enjoy dancing to the Heliotrope Ragtime Orchestra. But if you do those steps, Sept. 20 at the Mississippi Room is the place to be!

Sue Palmer and the Motel Swing Orchestra
October 18

San Diego’s Queen of Boogie Woogie brings her “Motel Swing Orchestra” to the AFCDJS concert series on Oct. 18.

The Orchestra consists of leader Sue Palmer on piano; Deejah Marie, vocals; April West, trombone and vocals; Jonny Viau, tenor sax; Steve Wilcox, guitar; Pete Harrison, bass; and Sharon Shufelt, drums.

Motel Swing is one of the busiest working bands in San Diego and Sue is also in demand as a soloist. Look for the band at the Mammoth Lakes Jazz Festival and their second appearance at the San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival in November.

Bobby Gordon Quartet
November 15
Internationally-acclaimed clarinetist Bobby Gordon will bring his quartet to the AFCDJS monthly concert dance on Nov. 15.

Gordon is a living legend, having played with jazz greats such as Wild Bill Davison, Muggsy Spanier, Bobby Hackett, the Jim Cullum Jazz Band and others. His latest CD, “Bobby Gordon Plays Joe Marsala: Lower Register” (Arbors 19352) was nominated as one of the top 10 jazz CDs of 2008 by jazz critic Martin Richards, of Jazz Journal International.

Gordon, a longtime San Diego resident, has assembled a great quartet, featuring vocalist Ramona DeRyan. Guitarist Joey Carano was the guitarist during Gordon’s long-running gig at Milligan’s in La Jolla. Bassist Rob Thorsen is one of the most respected bassists in jazz.
The quartet appeared most recently on Sunday nights at La Scala Italian Restaurant in the Point Loma area of San Diego.

Rescheduled from July 19
