More Working Bands & Musicians with “Roots” in the AFCDJS Ed Programs

The Uptown Rhythm Makers were inadvertently omitted from the article on local bands which include participants in the AFCDJS Jazz Camp and Monthly workshop (Summer, 2010 Jazz Rambler, p. 11). The Rhythm Makers include Jazz Camp and workshop veterans Bruce Vermazen (cornet), Bob Andersen (trombone, leader), Jim Fiedler (clarinet), Frank Highly (tuba) and Kenny Powell (drums). The band performs from 8-11pm the first Friday of each month at the Claire De Lune coffee house - 2906 University Ave., San Diego. (The Uptown Rhythm Makers also include legendary clarinetist Bobby Gordon as guest musician).

Another group omitted from the article is the Crown Island Jazz Band. Musicians from the camp and/or workshop are Janed Casady (piano) and John Palmer (tuba.) The band performs one Sunday a month at the Coronado Ferry Landing and at the Coronado Shores.

One more active ‘camper’ with the San Diego Banjo Band is Bill Barry. He and numerous other camp and workshop participants play at 5:30 every Tuesday at the McDonald’s at 53rd and El Cajon Blvd.

AFCDJS regrets the omission of these bands and musicians from the article and we encourage our members to hear these fine groups at local venues.
